Specialist Driveways & Paving in Edinburgh
Driveways and paving work includes excavation, sub-base preparation, drainage, kerbs and edging, block paving, slab work, tarmac and resin surfaces, and replacement of tired or failed surfaces. We also handle repair and upgrade work, from tarmac resurfacing and overlay and patching potholes in tarmac drives to lifting and relaying sunken block paving. A good result depends on the build-up underneath as much as the finished material on show, because weak groundwork is what causes movement, rutting, and standing water later on.
We begin by checking access, existing levels, drainage, the condition of the current surface, and how the area is used day to day. From there, the work is carried out in the right sequence and tied in where needed with related services such as Groundworks & Foundations and Fencing & Gates, so the finished driveway or paved area looks right and performs properly.

Types of Driveways & Paving We Install in Edinburgh
-
Concrete block paving
This is a highly durable option for residential driveways. We lay individual concrete blocks in a herringbone bond over a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base and a sharp sand bedding layer, locking them together with kiln-dried jointing sand. The herringbone bond and interlocking design spread vehicle weight evenly across the surface, which resists the creep and rutting that loosen blocks under load.
-
Natural stone monoblock
For traditional properties across the region, we install premium granite, limestone, or sandstone paving blocks. These natural stones retain their colour over decades and resist oil staining better than standard concrete alternatives. We lay them in contrasting borders or custom patterns to enhance the approach to the property.
-
Permeable paving systems
Designed to manage heavy rainfall, permeable blocks allow water to filter straight through the joints into a specialised sub-base below. This eliminates surface water pooling and helps prevent flooding without requiring extra drainage connections. It is a practical choice for front gardens being converted into parking areas.
-
Gravel and shingle driveways
Gravel provides an attractive, cost-effective option that delivers excellent natural drainage. We excavate the area, lay a non-woven geotextile membrane to stop weed growth, and pack down a solid sub-base before applying premium angular granite gravel. This stone shape locks together so it will not rut under car tyres.
-
Resin-bound paving
Resin-bound surfaces combine smooth natural aggregates with clear polyurethane resin, trowelled down over a solid concrete or asphalt base. The finished surface is completely smooth, highly durable, and fully porous, allowing rain to drain away naturally. It provides a modern appearance with no loose stones.
-
Dropped kerb approaches
To give vehicles a smooth entry from the public road, we can form a dropped kerb and footway crossing, excavating and lowering the existing kerbs. This work needs Vehicular Access Consent from Roads Planning and must be carried out by an approved roads contractor, which we arrange as part of the job. We reinforce the pavement base with structural concrete to protect underground utility pipes from being crushed, and finish to the standard required for vehicle crossings.

What Our Clients Say
-
Peter — MusselburghKingsknowe Building & Landscaping dug out our front garden and put down a new charcoal block paving driveway. The lines are dead straight and the integrated drainage handles heavy rain easily. The team worked hard and got the excavation done efficiently.
-
Sarah — LivingstonWe had a new driveway and side path done at the same time and the work was organised well throughout. The edging is neat, the paving feels solid underfoot, and the layout works much better than the old setup.
-
Gordon — DanderhallOur previous drive had started to sink in places and always held water after rain. Kingsknowe Building & Landscaping rebuilt it properly, sorted the drainage, and left us with a surface that feels much more substantial.
How We Do It
-
Site visit and assessment
The first step is checking the existing surface, site access, levels, drainage, and how vehicles or foot traffic will use the area. That gives a clear idea of what needs removed, how deep the build-up should be, and what type of finish will suit the job.
-
Set-out and groundwork preparation
Before the finished paving is laid, the area needs to be marked out properly and excavated to the right depth. This stage includes preparing the base, setting levels, and grading the falls away from the house so surface water runs off to a channel drain or soakaway rather than back towards the building before the visible surface work begins.
-
Installation of base, edging, and surface
The main installation stage covers the sub-base, any kerbs or edging, and the chosen paving or driveway material. Each part has to be built in the correct order so the finished surface is stable, level, and properly supported.
-
Finishing and final checks
Once the surface is complete, the final stage is checking levels, alignment, drainage, edges, and the overall finish. That helps make sure the area not only looks tidy on completion but is set up to hold up well in regular use.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Yes. Our workmanship guarantee covers the whole driveway, from the excavation and sub-base right up to the laid surface and edge restraints, so if anything sinks, lifts or moves because of how we built it, we return and sort it. The work is carried out to the Scottish Building Standards, and we finish every job with a walkthrough where we check the levels, falls, drainage and edging with you before we hand the driveway over.
-
They are. The block pavers, the sub-base aggregates and the jointing compounds we use all carry their own manufacturer warranties, and those sit alongside our workmanship cover rather than replacing it. We only lay materials that are rated for vehicle traffic and we install them the way the manufacturer specifies, so those product guarantees stay valid and you are covered on both the surface and the build beneath it.
-
We typically dig down to around two hundred and fifty millimetres. This allows for a one hundred and fifty millimetre compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base, a fifty millimetre sand bedding layer, and the paving blocks themselves. Proper excavation depth is what prevents the driveway from sinking over time.
-
Costs vary depending on the type of surface chosen, the ground conditions, and how much earth needs to be excavated. Standard concrete block paving costs less than premium natural stone or resin-bound systems. We give an exact written price after checking the levels and size of the site.
-
A standard two-car block paving driveway usually takes between five to seven working days. Bulk excavation and sub-base preparation take up the first few days, followed by the edging installation, block laying, and final compaction.
-
If a non-permeable material like standard concrete or tarmac is used over an area larger than five square metres, planning permission is generally needed to ensure surface water does not run into the public road. Using permeable paving or installing proper soakaways on your own land avoids this requirement.
-
For standard block paving or gravel driveways, vehicles can be parked on the surface immediately after the final compaction and sand sweep are complete. For resin-bound or concrete-based driveways, the surface should be left clear for around forty-eight hours to let the materials cure properly.
-
That usually comes back to a sub-base that was never compacted properly, weak edge restraint, or water getting into the base. Proper sub-base formation and compaction, with sound edge restraints, is what keeps a driveway stable under regular use and through the freeze-thaw cycles of a Scottish winter.
-
We lay a heavy-duty geotextile membrane beneath the aggregate sub-base to stop deep-rooted weeds from growing up through the soil. Any weeds that appear later usually grow from airborne seeds settling in the sand joints. Regular sweeping and refilling with kiln-dried sand will keep them from taking hold.
