Our Services

Professional Patio Installation in Edinburgh

Patio installation includes excavation, compacted Type 1 sub-base preparation, laying slabs or paving, setting falls so surface water drains away to a soakaway or porous area, building edges, and making sure the finished area works with the surrounding garden. A patio needs more than a neat surface, because the strength of the base and the quality of the levels are what decide how well it holds up over time.

We start by checking the layout, ground levels, drainage, access, and how the space connects with the rest of the garden. We lay patios across all kinds of local settings, from rear gardens on suburban houses to tight courtyard patios behind tenements and colonies, and side-return paving alongside townhouses. From there, the work is carried out in the right order and tied in naturally with related services such as Driveways & Paving and Garden Landscaping, so the finished patio looks right and performs properly in day to day use.

What Edinburgh Homeowners Say

What We Cover

Types of Patio Installation We Carry Out in Edinburgh

  1. Indian sandstone paving

A popular option for traditional and modern gardens due to its natural colour variations and riven texture. We bed each sandstone slab on a full wet mortar mix to ensure there are no hollow voids underneath that could collect water and crack in frost. The natural tones deepen when wet and resist fading well over time.

  2. Porcelain paving slabs

For a crisp, contemporary outdoor space, porcelain tiles offer a completely flat, non-porous surface that absorbs virtually no water. This makes the slabs highly resistant to frost damage, algae growth, and moss accumulation. Where grip matters in our wet climate, we specify R11 anti-slip rated porcelain pavers so the surface stays safe underfoot in the rain. We apply a polymer bonding primer to the back of every tile to guarantee a permanent bond with the concrete sub-base.

  3. Limestone and granite paving

Limestone delivers clean, consistent tones while granite provides unmatched structural hardness and slip resistance. These premium natural stones are ideal for heavy traffic areas and high-end garden designs. We joint the stones using high-performance resin pointing compounds that remain flexible and prevent weed growth.

  4. Multi-level patios and terraces

If the garden slopes away from the house, we can build a series of stepped, interconnected paved terraces. We construct solid retaining structures to hold back the upper soil layers before levelling the ground for each individual seating tier. This turns unusable sloped areas into functional split-level spaces. Where a raised patio stands more than 300mm above the surrounding ground, planning permission is required, and we factor that in before work starts.

  5. Inset paved seating circles

We cut and lay intricate circular paving kits to create distinct feature areas within a larger garden layout. These are framed with contrasting stone setts or brick borders to define the space clearly. This type of detailed work provides an excellent focal point for fire pits, tables, or freestanding structures.

  6. Concrete flagstone paving

For a dependable and uniform look, textured concrete flagstones offer an excellent durable solution. Available in a variety of moulded finishes that mimic weathered stone, these slabs provide good grip underfoot. We lay them on a solid base with consistent joint widths to ensure a clean, neat finish.

What Our Clients Say

5.00

  • Kingsknowe Building & Landscaping cleared our sloping lawn and put down a grey sandstone patio with built-in stone steps. The alignment is precise and the stone looks excellent. The team worked cleanly and did not leave a mess on the driveway.

    Sandra — Morningside
  • Our old patio had started to move and was awkward to use after rain. Kingsknowe Building & Landscaping rebuilt it properly, sorted the drainage, and left us with a much cleaner and more solid outdoor area.

    Ian — Bonnyrigg
  • We wanted a patio with a path linking it to the side access and lawn, and the whole layout now feels far more joined up. The detailing around the edges and steps was handled really well.

Our Process

How We Do It

  • Site visit and planning the layout

The first step is checking the space, existing levels, access, drainage, and how the patio needs to work in practice. That gives a clear idea of the best size, shape, and position for the new paved area.

  • Preparation and groundwork

Before any paving is laid, the area needs to be excavated and prepared to the right depth. This stage covers the sub-base, a weed-suppressing geotextile membrane, levels, falls, and any edge details needed so the patio has a sound platform underneath it.

  • Laying the patio

Once the groundwork is ready, the paving is laid carefully to the agreed pattern and line. The focus here is on keeping the levels right, the joints consistent, and the finished surface solid underfoot.

  • Finishing and final checks

At the end of the job, the patio is checked over for line, level, drainage, and overall finish. That final stage matters because a patio should not just look tidy on day one, it should feel properly built when used through the seasons.
