Complete Garden Transformation: From Overgrown to Outstanding
This rear garden on Kedslie Road in Liberton had been left untouched for years. Heavy weed growth, compacted and uneven ground and no real structure had made the space unusable and hard to maintain. The owners wanted a complete rethink — a garden with defined zones, a water feature as a centrepiece and planting that would establish and look after itself through the Edinburgh seasons.
The brief covered everything from ground clearance and new perimeter fencing through to a curved lawn, custom concrete pond, cobblestone paths and bark-mulched planting beds. Kingsknowe Building & Landscaping managed the full project with their own team, working through each stage in sequence so the groundwork was right before anything visible went down.
The Challenge
The garden was heavily overgrown with established weed growth across the full plot, and the compacted ground beneath gave us no usable structure to build from.
The owners wanted a curved layout with a bespoke concrete pond, which meant all the groundwork, edging and drainage had to be set out precisely before any visible finishing could begin. Getting the levels right across the sloping Liberton plot was the critical first step that everything else depended on.
Our Approach
We started with a full site clearance, removing all vegetation and breaking up the compacted ground, then installed new closeboard fencing around the full perimeter to give the project a clean boundary to work within.
The layout was marked out on the cleared ground, with the curved brickwork and edging set first to define the lawn area, pond surround and paths before any topsoil or turf went down. The pond itself was shuttered and rendered in concrete with a cobblestone edge detail around the full perimeter.
Once the hard landscaping was in place, topsoil was laid across the planting beds and lawn area, the turf was laid to the curved shape, and the beds were finished with bark mulch and new planting to complete the space.
The Outcome
The completed garden bears no resemblance to what was there before. The curved lawn, cobblestone pond surround, brick-edged paths and established planting beds give the space a structure the owners can use and enjoy year round.
The new closeboard fencing gives full privacy across the plot and the pond has become the natural focal point of the garden. A project that started as an overgrown blank canvas was left as a space the family are genuinely proud of.
